Radio is a powerful medium as it caters to an audience, which may not be literate or have access to television to be informed. Bearing in mind the critical role of radio in reaching out to people and in shaping their decision-making process, UNICEF is actively involved in organizing capacity building workshops for radio professionals, both from Private FM and All India Radio, since 2014.

Earlier in the month of October, UNICEF India and Association for Radio Operators of India (AROI) organised an event in October, on the topic of Girl Child and “Routine Immunization” (RI). The event saw immense support by key influencers and celebrities. UNICEF ambassador and former cricketer Sachin Tendulkar was one of the attendees.

Many radio journalists supported the cause by airing programs on the issue. RJ Payal, from Radio City 91.1 FM, Nagpur, well known for her character Chachi Jaan, hosted one such program. She ran a contest on “Routine Immunization” on her show in which she asked a question to the audience – What does “5 saal, 7 baar” mean?
